Joel Cummins Covers Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Journey & More For ‘Good Friday Night Keys’

51

Joel Cummins resumed his Friday Night Keys livestrem series last night with a special Good Friday Night Keys edition. The Umphrey’s McGee keyboardist offered covers of Steely Dan, Pink Floyd, Journey and more for the holiday performance.

“Pastor Joel Cummins” kicked things off with a synth-soaked jam before getting into some jazz on the piano with a gorgeous rendition of the Miles Davis and Bill Evans composed “Flamenco Sketches,” which appeared on Davis’ landmark 1959, Kind Of Blue. After welcoming the internet audience Joel noted that the Cummins household had recently welcomed a new member. Cummins then sang Brendan Bayliss’ part on UM’s “Cemetary Walk” ahead of Beethoven’s “Sonata #8 in C Minor” and a return to “Cemetary Walk.”

Next up, Steely Dan’s “Hey Nineteen” from their stellar 1980 album Gaucho before Cummins offered up the UM instrumental “The Fussy Dutchmen.” Joel continued with more UM, once again singing BB’s part on “The Final Word” which led into another Umphrey’s instrumental composed by Cummins, “Kimble.” The ubiquitous Journey classic “Don’t Stop Believin,” which saw Joel showing off his falsetto, kicked off a covers segment that also included Pink Floyd’s The Dark Side Of The Moon tracks “Breathe” which included a synth interlude that segued into “Great Gig In The Sky.” The penultimate song of the stream saw Joel returning to classical with Bach’s “Partita #1 Gigue” which melted into a synth-laced “Cemetary Walk II” to close out the performance.
