[4/5/21]: This past weekend saw a special one-time collaboration between keyboardist John Medeski, bassist Karina Rykman, and drummer John Morgan Kimock. The outdoor concert at a private residence in Hewitt, NJ on Saturday was presented by Skull & Bones as the first in its Tree of Life benefit concert series. Fans who were unable to attend the concert can now listen to the show’s soundboard audio, now available now on Internet Archive.

For their first public collaboration together, Medeski, Rykman, and Kimock delivered an all-improv performance, with no real setlist structure planned for the private event. The roughly 80-minute show heard the musicians skillfully weave through uncharted territory to deliver a concert experience that was truly one of a kind.

“We’re gonna create some shit spontaneously, on the spot and I hope you come along for the ride,” Rykman told the crowd to open the show.

From there, Karina and the two Johns loaded up their musical spacecraft and took audiences on a ride of extended improvisation. While the tracklist itself simply reads of 11 songs entitled “Improv”, each track found the trio taking the music in an entirely new and inspired direction.
