Soulful rocker Maggie Rose has released the official music video for new single “What Are We Fighting For”, the first in a trilogy of video releases set to accompany her latest studio album, Have A Seat, due out August 20th via Starstruck Records.
Set in front of the cinematically adorned table from the Have A Seat album cover, the video, per Rose, represents the aftermath of a big blowout which will play out in the two forthcoming clips. As she told CMT about the new video, “‘What Are We Fighting For’ is one of three videos and it takes place after the epic fight at the table has occurred. The story as a whole isn’t told in chronological order and I wanted to present the ending first to tell the viewer ‘it’s all going to be ok; we survived.’ But, we can still reflect and do better moving forward.”
The track finds Rose harmonizing with singers Karita Law and Shanay Johnson, a duo known for their work with Brittany Howard and Emily King. With Law and Johnson at her side, Rose is able to take her powerful vocals to soaring new heights as she probes the conscience of the modern world by asking, “What Are We Fighting For”.
“What am I fighting for?” Rose pondered when the single was initially released. “Compassion, empathy, and even excellence within me, my music, and the people and the world around me, but don’t get me wrong—my zeal is not always consistent, and the question itself poses varying challenges from one day to the next. Some days I struggle to simply feel worthy and everything feels heavy and dark. Other days I’m totally fired up and I demand that my worthiness be recognized. Some days I have no will to fight, other days I’m frustrated at the lack of fight I observe around me. However, just asking the question of ourselves everyday is a fight in itself, and the question is one only we alone can ask and answer.”

Have A Seat, Rose’s third full-length LP, was produced by Ben Tanner of Alabama Shakes at the iconic FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL. In a series of pre-pandemic sessions, Rose recorded the album live with a lineup of heavy-hitters that includes bassist David Hood of the Swampers (the group of session musicians who played on records from legends like Aretha Franklin and Etta James) and guitarist Will McFarlane (Bonnie Raitt, Levon Helm), along with her longtime bandmates/collaborators Larry Florman (background vocals/percussion), Alex Haddad (guitars), and Sarah Tomek (drums) of Them Vibes, in addition to a guest appearance by Marcus King. On Friday, April 16th, Maggie Rose will make her way to Denver, CO for a pair of shows at Cervantes’ Masterpiece Ballroom on April 16th (one early show and one late show). Along with her backing band Them Vibes, the Denver shows will find Rose joined by special guests Nicholas Gerlach (saxophone), Gabe Mervine (trumpet), and more. Tickets for Maggie Rose’s socially distant concerts at Cervantes are on sale here.
