Sufjan Stevens latest project, Convocations, consists of five volumes containing a total of 49 tracks spanning two-and-a-half-hours. While Convocations, described as a “reflection on present times,” arrives via Asthmatic Kitty on May 6, Stevens today released “Meditation V,” one of 10 tracks featured on the project’s Meditations installment.
Meditations comes out this Thursday, April 8. The other volumes — Lamentations, Revelations, Celebrations and Incantations — will be shared weekly.
Sufjan Stevens composed Convocations last fall as a tribute to his biological father, who died in September two days after the release of Sufjan’s The Ascension LP. “Each volume replicates and reflects a stage of mourning—five sonic cycles exploring loss, isolation and anxiety,” noted a press release heralding Convocations. All 49 tracks were written, performed, recorded, mixed and produced by Stevens.
The New York City resident tapped Mexican artist Melissa Fuentes to create a longform generative video art piece as an accompaniment to the album. Portions of the longform work will be issued with each single and volume of Convocations on YouTube. Convocations will also be released as a 5-LP vinyl box set on August 20.
