Jeremiah Fraites, the multi-instrumentalist for The Lumineers, has released his new solo piano recording covering Nirvana‘s “Heart-Shaped Box” in alignment with the anniversary of Kurt Cobain‘s 1994 suicide on Monday.

The new cover will appear on Fraites’ newly-announced Piano, Piano (Acoustic) solo EP, due out April 16th via Dualtone Records. The EP acts as a companion to Fraites’ 11-track debut solo album, Piano Piano, which arrived back in January. The EP will also include Fraites’ cover of Billie Eilish‘s “when the party’s over”.

The haunting new cover hears the talented musician recreate Nirvana’s masterpiece power ballad, which originally appeared on their third and final studio album, 1993’s In Utero. No lyrics were needed this time around, as Fraites’ piano melodies take the place of where the vocals go to deliver an impressive listening experience for fans of the famous grunge-rock era band.

The Lumineers embarked on a lengthy run of North American tour dates in early 2020, but the tour was forced to end early with the shutdown of the North American concert industry in mid-March.
