This past Saturday saw the highly anticipated showdown between YouTuber Jake Paul and ex-MMA fighter Ben Askren in Triller‘s latest Fight Club match. The main event for many, however, was the worldwide debut performance by hip-hop supergroup Mt. Westmore, who used the appearance to perform the unreleased single “Big Subwoofer” for the first time anywhere.
In an ironic twist, the 20-minute performance by Mt. Westmore—featuring Ice Cube, Snoop Dogg, E-40, and Too $hort—lasted longer than the fight itself, where Paul knocked Askren out in the first round, taking just under two minutes. Whereas the fight by and large was a bust for the thousands of people who shelled out for the pay-per-view event, fans of Mt. Westmore certainly got their money’s worth.
The elaborate performance began with each rapper rolling through a medley of their hits, akin to a Super Bowl halftime show. Beginning with E-40 who synced together “Choices” and Big Sean‘s “I Don’t Fuck With You” (upon which he’s featured), the mic was passed to Too $hort for “Ain’t Gone Do It” and “Blow The Whistle”.
Things began to heat up as Ice Cube emerged from the scaffolding and flatscreen cocoon that housed the performances, going into his signature hit “It Was A Good Day”—where he snuck in a shoutout to the late Kobe Bryant—followed by “You Can Do It”. The party then reached critical mass as Snoop Dogg emerged in a cloud of smoke to perform “Gin And Juice”, Drop It Like It’s Hot”, and “C.E.O.”, the latter of which is set to appear on his forthcoming album, 4/20.
With all of the solo hits out of the way, it was time for these hip-hop juggernauts to join forces like the Transformers of rap that they are. The quartet came together for the debut of “Big Subwoofer”, one of many tracks to appear on the group’s debut LP later this month. The song strings together all of the lumbering swagger possessed by these living icons of rap music, stitched together as a bar-for-bar team effort by a group of consummate professionals.
