Bob Weir & Wolf Bros Continue Colorado Run In Vail

57

Bob Weir and Wolf Bros continued their Colorado run in Vail on Friday night with the first of two concerts at Gerald R. Ford Amphitheater for the GoPro Mountains Of Music event. Bobby and company would deliver Grateful Dead classics as well as a song from the Ratdog catalog with the Wolf Pack ensemble and more.

After two magical nights at Red Rocks on Tuesday and Wednesday, guitarist Bob Weir, drummer Jay Lane, bassist Don Was, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti and pedal steel player Greg Leisz began the first night in Vail (which saw no repeats from Red Rocks) with “Hell In A Bucket. The group eased into the tune with a bit of jamming but kicked off the song proper with a spirited start. Bobby led the band through a tasty version of the In The Dark cut before cooling things down a bit with Bob Dylan’s “When I Paint My Masterpiece.” The band continued with Johnny Cash’s “Big River” ahead of the Dead classic “Tennessee Jed.” Willie Dixon’s blues standard “Little Red Rooster” came next before the Wolf Pack string and horn section featuring woodwind specialist Sheldon Brown, violinist Mads Tolling, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and cellist Alex Kelly joined for the Ratdog tune “Two Djinn.” A Wolf Pack “Wharf Rat” would wrap up the first set.

The second frame got underway with the quintet on “El Paso.” The Marty Robbins country classic featured some nice pedal steel touches from Leisz. The Wolf Pack then emerged, and would stay on for the rest of the set, and helped Bobby and the band on delightful bit of jammming leading into “Jack Straw” which in turn segued into “Scarlet Begonias.” “Shakedown Street” would then kick off a seamless set-closing section that saw the ensemble exploring “Dark Star” followed by “The Other One,” “Morning Dew” and the Buddy Holly fan-favorite “Not Fade Away” to close out the set. “Liberty” would get the encore going before the Wolf Pack helped Weir and the band bring the evening to a close with “U.S. Blues.”
