Joe Russo’s Almost Dead returned to Westville Music Bowl on Saturday for the band’s second of three nights at the New Haven, CT venue. Though JRAD primarily exists as a Grateful Dead-inspired act, the music of The Allman Brothers Band was in the air last night.

Following Friday night’s heater of a show, the band skipped the foreplay and dug straight in with an opening jam that led straight into “They Love Each Other”. Things soon took an unexpected turn with the Bob Weir Blue Mountain track “Gonesville”, before a “Cumberland Blues” which saw the entire group syncing together for some not-so-subtle teases of “Whipping Post”, though a full-on cover was ever-elusive. A quick breather with “Row Jimmy” was followed by an unfinished “Mr. Charlie” ahead of “Viola Lee Blues” and finally “Brown-Eyed Women” to close the first frame at 7:44 p.m. ET.

Returning to the stage promptly at 8:17 p.m., JRAD eased into the second set with a jam that rolled into a much-needed “Here Comes Sunshine” as the crowd braced for intermittent rain. The band beckoned the crowd to come hear “Uncle John’s Band” before a sleepy “Alligator” emerged prior to the age-old wisdom of “Man Smart, Woman Smarter”. The Georgia-bred payoff came next with a justifiably jammy “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed”, which also included “Dark Star” teases, before “Peggy-O” closed the set. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead then returned to the stage for “My Brother Esau” to close the evening.
