Umphrey’s McGee returned to the familiar confines of Morrison, Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre this past weekend for a three-night stand at the iconic venue. JamBase is pleased to premiere official video featuring the first portion of UM’s expansive “Bridgeless” from the second night of the run on Saturday, June 19.
The sextet had plenty of treats in store for their faithful fans throughout the weekend. Opening night on Friday featured a wild “Wizard Burial Ground” sequence, a debut cover of Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)” and a performance of “Restrung,” a song formerly known as “Unsung Hero.” Highlights from Saturday in addition to the +-18 minute “Bridgeless” within a second set that would close with the end of the song were a first set bookended by “Nothing Too Fancy,” a destructive “Hanging Chads” and a rare cover of Frank Zappa’s “Dirty Love.” Sunday’s finale included UM’s first cover of Notorious B.I.G.’s “Big Poppa” since 2013, the debut of original “Nether” and many other standout moments.
“Bridgeless” is a beloved Umphrey’s McGee original that dates back to 2004. The sextet often breaks the song up as they did at Red Rocks on Saturday. UM followed the composed section of “Bridgeless” with a rocking jam. The band then went a funkier route as they went well beyond the song’s typical boundaries. Guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger took turns soloing while keyboardist Joel Cummins worked over his synth. Drummer Kris Myers provided a strong beat as the band transitioned into a major key and built the improv to a triumphant peak. Eventually, the music faded to silence.

Tonight, Umphrey’s McGee plays their first of two shows at Apple Valley Park in Lafayette, New York. On Sunday, the sextet heads to Woodstock, New York for their debut performance at Levon Helm Studios. UM has teamed with Mandolin to provide a livestream dubbed “Rambling On” featuring Sunday’s concert.
