George Porter Jr. and his Runnin’ Pardners have released a new music video for “Crying For Hope” that confronts the harsh realities of racial injustice in the U.S. The song served as the title track to the funk legend’s first full-length LP in a decade, released back in March.
Like many of the new tracks on Crying For Hope, the title song was inspired by the social reckoning that occurred last summer in the wake of George Floyd‘s murder by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin. Though Porter is renowned for his laid-back funk stylings, songs like “Crying For Hope” put the ingrained frustration of inequality at the forefront of his music. Poter’s bass exudes a message of pain rather than pleasure as the beat of the rhythm pounds in step with the continued march for progress across the United States.
“‘Crying For Hope’ was inspired by the continued racial tension in our country,” Porter said in a statement. “I wrote the song from my own pain and experience watching the events of last summer. I really just wanted to be able to feel hopeful for the future. I think the video captures both feelings of the song, the seriousness of the issue and that feeling of hope and change we all wish for.”
