Phil Lesh & Friends Featuring Dawes Members Continue Brooklyn Bowl Nashville Run

77

Phil Lesh & Friends continued their three-night stand at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on Friday after the Grateful Dead bassist made his debut at the venue on Thursday. The lineup for the run features members of Dawes and guitarist Grahame Lesh as well as vocalist Nicki Bluhm who joined in for the second set.

Phil Lesh and Dawes’ guitarists Taylor Goldsmith and Trevor Menear, drummer Griffin Goldsmith and keyboardist Lee Pardini along with Grahame kicked off the show in the intimate space with a tight rendition of the Dead favorite “Althea” held together by a sticky beat from Griffin, sung by Menear and featuring some fiery soloing from Taylor.

Next up, the band got into a raucous “Deal” with some saucy barroom piano from Pardini and Taylor handling lead vocals. “Ship Of Fools” and “Jack Straw” followed before Phil stepped to the mic for “Mississippi Half-Step Uptown Toodeloo.” A nearly 14-minute “Let It Grow” came next ahead of set closer “Casey Jones,” after which Phil took a minute to thank the audience.

Nicki Bluhm would emerge with the band for the second set after performing with The Empty Eyes at the City Winery in Nashville. The frame began with the classic Dead trifecta of “Help On The Way” > “Slipknot!” > “Franklin’s Tower.” Taylor led the band through “Help” and into “Slip,” which featured some tasty fills from Griffin as well as a wild free for all jam that ebbed and flowed before the band headed back into the “Slip” riff and on into “Franklin’s.” Taylor helmed the first verses while Phil would take the third and Nicki the fourth with Phil returning to sing the final verse.

A choice pairing of “Bird Song,” with Phil resuming lead vocals duties, and “Cassidy” followed ahead of a standalone “Black Muddy River.” A sequence of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Sugaree” brought the second set to a close. Phil Lesh & Friends retook the stage for an encore of “U.S. Blues” followed by Phil’s Donor Rap to close out the evening.
