The Disco Biscuits launched their two-night City Bisco run at TD Pavillion at The Mann Center For The Performing Arts in their hometown of Philadelphia on Friday. The Biscuits welcomed Philly native Tom Hamilton for the encore.
The Disco Biscuits fittingly kicked off the show with the iconic theme from Rocky, which is set in Philadelphia. Keyboardist Aron Magner delivered some shimmering synth on the song before guitarist Jon Gutwillig took over on the soaring melody. The Rocky theme would serve as the intro to “Spaga.” After cycling through “Spaga’s” composed sections, Bisco offered up their cover of Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell” which headed into the classic “Spacebirdmatingcall” ahead of a Todd Terje “Tractorbeam.” A return to “Spacebird” would close out the first frame.
tDB began the second set with the classic “Astronaut” which headed into the newer song “Running Into The Night,” which the band debuted during their 2019 NYE run. “Running” gave way to the Magner composition “The Great Abyss,” which in turn headed into the newer tune “Clocks.” An Eden “Tractobeam” outing then came ahead of a return to “Astronaut” as well as “Running Into The Night” to close out the seamless second set.
Tom Hamilton would come back out with the band for the encore which began with the spirited opening of the vintage tDB tune “Humuhumunukunukuapua’a.” Bassist Marc Brownstein then delivered the lyrics followed by a jam on the lyrical section with Hamilton and Barber playing off each other. The groove began to take a darker turn before drummer Allen Aucoin dropped the group into a four on the floor beat and the band got into a trance jam in earnest. The guitarists built up the section before hitting the triumphant notes of “Run Like Hell” to bring the evening to a close.
