Gov’t Mule Busts Out ZZ Top Cover In Minnesota

66

Gov’t Mule dusted off a cover of the ZZ Top classic “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide” on Monday night in Shakopee, Minnesota. The band’s first and only other rendition of the song from ZZ Top’s 1979 album Degüello since December 31, 2003 came towards the middle of their second set at Canterbury Park.

Revolution Come…Revolution Go standout “Stone Cold Rage” got last night’s opening frame underway. The quartet then played oldie “Rocking Horse” before returning to Revolution Come…Revolution Go for “Pressure Under Fire.” Three tour debuts followed in “Fool’s Moon,” The J.B.’s “Doing It To Death” and “Whisper In Your Soul.” From there, Mule fit “Mountain Jam” within “Game Face” and capped the set by working live staple “Trane” into recently debuted covers of Link Wray’s “Rumble” and James Brown’s “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine.”

Gov’t Mule kicked off Monday’s second set with Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker.” Next came “Revolution Come, Revolution Go” and “Feel Like Breaking Up Somebody’s Home.” Warren Haynes and company have covered The Rolling Stones and ZZ Top songs at each show this summer following the deaths of Stones drummer Charlie Watts and ZZ Top bassist Dusty Hill. Last night the band played “Angie” by The Stones and the aforementioned ZZ Top cover “I’m Bad, I’m Nationwide.” The former last saw action on January 16, 2012 as per Setlist.FM while Mule’s Facebook revealed the latter was performed after 1,285 shows on the shelf.

The four-piece went on to deliver a “Mule” featuring covers of Van Morrison’s “I’ve Been Working” and Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” within and then ended the frame with the beloved “Soulshine.” Gov’t Mule closed out the night with a “Look On Yonder Wall” encore. The band now has a few days off before returning to the stage on Friday in Selbyville, Delaware.
