Gov’t Mule Welcomes Trombone Shorty In Colorado

Trombonist Trombone Shorty joined Gov’t Mule for a portion of their set in Dillon, Colorado on Saturday night. Saturday’s concert was the second of two Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue/Gov’t Mule co-headlining performances at the Dillon Amphitheater.

Mule took the stage in Dillon on Saturday following a set from Trombone Shorty & Orleans Avenue. The quartet opened with “Traveling Tune Part 1” and then lit into a rousing “Thorazine Shuffle” that spanned nearly 10 minutes. Warren Haynes and company kept the focus on classic originals by pairing “Mule” and “Soulshine” followed by a “Banks Of The Deep End” and “Devil Likes It Slow” sequence.

Next, Trombone Shorty emerged towards the middle of “Fallen Down.” The trombonist added to a jam on the Grateful Dead’s “The Other One” and stuck around for the blues standard “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl.” Haynes and his bandmates continued on after the guest spot with Déjà Voodoo standout “About To Rage” before “Broke Down On The Brazos” gave way to a “Tributary Jam.”

Gov’t Mule went on to continue a trend of covering Rolling Stones and ZZ Top songs in the wake of Charlie Watts and Dusty Hill’s deaths that started the previous Wednesday at the tour opener in Salt Lake City. On Saturday, the quartet treated fans to takes on the Stones’ “Brown Sugar” and ZZ Top’s “Nasty Dogs & Funky Kings.” While the former was played by Mule two nights prior in Aspen, the second saw action for the first time since February 15, 2014 as per Setlist.FM.

“Time To Confess” followed and then Mule provided a bookend for the main set with “Traveling Tune Part 2.” The four-piece ended the night with an encore featuring a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing.” Gov’t Mule plays Canterbury Park in Shakopee, Minnesota tonight.
