Lettuce, Grace Potter, Warren Haynes & More Honor Jerry Garcia At Daze Between Concert In New Haven

159

An all-star Rex Foundation benefit concert took place at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut on Sunday as part of the Daze Between series honoring the life and legacy of late Grateful Dead guitarist Jerry Garcia. Lettuce, Warren Haynes, Grace Potter, Mikaela Davis, Keller Williams’ Grateful Grass and Roots of Creation each performed during the marathon show.

Roots Of Creation kicked off the evening with a “Grateful Dub” set. The reggae band worked the start of “Shakedown Street” into “Casey Jones” and followed with “They Love Each Other.” More Grateful Dead live repertoire favorites would follow including “Turn On Your Love Light,” “Deal,” “China Cat Sunflower,” “Fire On The Mountain” and “Standing On The Moon.”

Keller Williams was joined by members of The Hillbenders for the Grateful Grass performance in New Haven. Williams led the group through “Cold Rain & Snow” to open. Bluegrass-tinged versions of GD originals such as “Shakedown Street,” “Eyes Of The World,” “Feel Like A Stranger” and “Bertha” followed as well as a mashup featuring “Cumberland Blues” and “They Love Each Other” and Sunday sermon “Samson & Delilah.” Harpist Mikaela Davis then fronted her trio on “Bird Song” and “Mountains Of The Moon.”

Grace Potter took the stage next and began with originals “Nothing But The Water (I)” and “Every Heartbeat” and partial takes on Traffic’s “Shanghai Noodle Factory” and Alanis Morissette’s “You Oughta Know.” It was then back to originals “Paris (Ooh La La)” and “2:22” before Warren Haynes emerged to join Grace for Wanda Jackson’s “Silver Threads & Golden Needles,” a song the Dead played occasionally between 1966 – 1970 and the pair’s standout cover of “Gold Dust Woman” by Fleetwood Mac.

Warren Haynes continued solo with “Patchwork Quilt,” a tune he wrote upon learning Jerry had died, and a gorgeous take on the Dead’s “Stella Blue.” Next, Keller emerged to join Haynes for Van Morrison’s “He Ain’t Give You None.” Warren was then by his lonesome on Grateful Dead ballad “China Doll” ahead of Potter returning to augment the Gov’t Mule frontman on “Friend Of The Devil” and “I Shall Be Released.”

Lettuce had the honors of headlining Sunday’s concert. The band’s Lettuce Does JGB set featured a mix of originals and material from the Jerry Garcia Band repertoire. Up first was “Finders Keepers” along with “Good Morning Mr. Shmink” from Lettuce’s Resonate album. From there, Warren Haynes took the stage with Lettuce for “After Midnight” and “Phyllis.” The former also featured vocalists Alecia Chakour and Anna Lombard who returned after Lettuce’s “Monorail 3000” into “Blast Off” pairing to augment the band on Little Milton’s “That’s What Love Will Make You Do,” Donny Hathaway’s “Magnificent Sanctuary Band” and the Garcia original “Cats Under The Stars” to close out the show.
