Watch Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s Allman Brothers Band Tribute Set At LOCKN’ Farm

Joe Russo’s Almost Dead devoted their “Other Shit” set at The LOCKN’ Farm on Sunday to songs from The Allman Brothers Band’s live repertoire. The quintet was joined by The Slip/The Barr Brothers drummer Andrew Barr for the hour-long performance at their mini-festival in Arrington, Virginia.

Guitarist Tom Hamilton handled lead vocals on the “Whipping Post” opener. Keyboardist Marco Benevento took the first solo before Hamilton laid into a frenetic solo of his own as Barr and Joe Russo provided a strong rhythmic base. Scott Metzger was showcased both vocally and instrumentally on the “One Way Out” that followed. The middle of the blues classic was devoted to a drum duet between Joe and Andrew.

“One Way Out” led into a “Dreams” sung by Tommy. Hamilton utilized a slide for his first solo before passing the baton to Metzger for an otherworldly solo of his own. Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s Allman Brothers Band tribute came to a close with a 20-minute “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed,” the lone song the band had previously performed. Scott Metzger unleashed a torrent of powerful riffs ahead of Benevento’s Clavinet and organ solo. It was then Hamilton’s turn to let it rip before another drum duet from Andrew Barr and Joe Russo.

Sunday marked the final day for Joe Russo’s Almost Dead’s mini-festival. The afternoon began with a collaborative improv set featuring JRAD members along with members of The Slip, drummer Billy Martin and keyboardist John Medeski.
