moe. guitarist Al Schnier and bassist Rob Derhak recently announced their moe.stly Acoustic duo tour set to kick off in September. In honor of the acoustic outing, JamBase looks back at video from moe.’s acoustic set at Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville in Ocho Rios, Jamaica on January 12 during their Tropical Throe.down destination event in 2016 for this edition of Sunday Cinema.

While Tropical Throe.down took place at the Jewel Paradise Cove Resort in Runaway Bay, Jamaica, moe. decamped to Margaritaville to deliver their stripped-down set which saw guitarists Al Schnier and Chuck Garvey shouldering acoustic guitars while drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin manned mini-kits along with Derhak on electric bass. The band delivered a set full of rare covers as well as a handful of originals.

The band would fittingly soundcheck with Bob Marley’s “One Love” before the Margaritaville acoustic affair got going in earnest with moe.’s “Moth.” The set also featured JJ. Cale’s “Cajun Moon” and “Blister In The Sun” by Violent Femmes. Both songs were early staple covers for the band but plays tapered off as the 21st century wore on. moe. numbers “Okayalright,” “Blue Eyed Son” and “That Country Tune” bridged the Cale and Femmes covers.

The biggest bust out and most beach apropos song came in the form of Rupert Holmes’ “Escape (The Pina Colada Song),” which hadn’t been performed since February 25, 1999 in Solana Beach, California, as per Phantasy Tour (sidenote: the band played all the aforementioned covers, save for “One Love,” in Solana Beach). The originals “Johnny Lineup” and “St. Augustine” followed ahead of set-closer, Talking Heads’ “This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody).”
