Courtney Barnett Admits Music Video Similarities With Melbourne Band Quivers

Courtney Barnett has acknowledged the similarities between her ‘Before You Gotta Go’ video and ‘You’re Not Always On My Mind’ by Quivers. However, she says all similarities were “completely coincidental.”

The music video for Barnett’s latest single ‘Before You Gotta Go’ follows the singer as she holds a microphone out to the wilderness, recording what she hears on a portable tape player.

The video was directed by Claudia Sangiorgi Dalimore and filmed in Tamaki Makaurau, Aotearoa (New Zealand) and on the lands of the Wathaurong/Wadawurrung, Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung people of the Kulin nation.

The video is remarkably similar to the 2019 video for ‘You’re Not Always On My Mind’ by Melbourne band Quivers. Scenes in Quivers’ video were also shot on Woi Wurrung and Boon Wurrung country and depict singer Sam Nicholson holding out a microphone to record the world around him.

Quivers and director Nina Renee got in touch with Barnett to address the similarities between their videos. In response, Barnett has added a note to the ‘Before You Gotta Go’ YouTube description.

“It has been pointed out to us that this video bears remarkable similarities to the video for ‘You’re Not Always On My Mind’ by Melbourne band Quivers, directed by Nina Renee,” it says. “The resemblance is uncanny, but it’s entirely coincidental. We respect and admire Quivers and Nina Renee and we appreciate them reaching out and having the conversation with us.”

Barnett offered further explanation on Twitter. “I thought I had come up with a beautiful, original idea for a video, but it seems like I was wrong!” she said. “I’d like to introduce you to Melbourne band Quivers and director, Nina Renee, who had the same idea way before me.”

In a follow up tweet, Barnett said, “If I had seen this clip when I was making mine I would have completely changed my concept or the way we explored it.” She also shared links to Quivers’ and Nina Renee’s homepages.

They’re both cracking tunes, by the way, with strangely entwined sentiments.
