Almost a year after releasing its latest studio album in 2020’s Good Luck With Whatever, Americana-rock outfit Dawes finally returned to New York City on Friday for a blissful evening of music at Central Park SummerStage. The Rumsey Playfield venue was spared from any chance of rain on a foggy New York evening, and fans were more than ready to welcome Dawes following opening sets from Erin Rae and Bonnie Light Horseman.

The band led by guitarist and singer Taylor Goldsmith didn’t waste any time diving into their new material as Goldsmith took the stage solo to open the 15-song headline performance with “Who Do You Think You’re Talking To?” before being joined by his bandmates. The grittier-sounding “If I Wanted Someone” from 2011’s Nothing Is Wrong came next followed by “When The Tequila Runs Out” and a lively “From a Window Seat”, with the latter doing a fine job of getting the venue up and dancing under the night sky.

Goldsmith and company kept the new material flowing with “Didn’t Fix Me”, followed by a yet-to-be-released song titled, “Someone Else’s Cafe…Doomscroller Tries To Relax”. Watch the band’s performance of the unreleased original in the fan-shot video below.

The band continued with some of its older material including “A Little Bit of Everything”, “Roll With the Punches”, and “When My Time Comes” before returning to the Good Luck With Whatever tracklist with “Still Feel Like a Kid”. Goldsmith and Dawes brought the show to a close with “Things Happen” and a fitting sing-a-long rendition of “All Your Favorite Bands”.

Dawes’ ongoing fall/winter tour continues with a scheduled stop at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston, MA on Saturday. Head to the band’s website for tickets and tour info. New York City area fans can also catch members of Dawes in action when they team up with Phil Lesh for the bassist’s upcoming Halloween residency at The Capitol Theatre next month.
