Eddie Vedder Performs With All-Star Band At Ohana Festival

97

Pearl Jam frontman Eddie Vedder performed a headlining set backed by an all-star band at last night’s Ohana Festival. Vedder was joined at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, Calfornia by Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, former RHCP/current Pearl Jam touring guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, The Who touring bassist Pino Palladino, guitarist/vocalist Glen Hansard and guitarist Andrew Watt.

Vedder was filling in for Kings of Leon, who canceled their Ohana performance so that bandmates and brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followell could be with their mother Betty Ann Murphy, who died last night. After opening the set with R.E.M.’s “Drive,” Vedder introduced a performance of Pearl Jam’s “Long Road” by sending a message of love to the Followill siblings and their mother, and followed it with a cover of Kings Of Leon’s “Molly’s Chambers.”

Vedder performed his new song “Long Way” that will appear on his forthcoming solo album, Earthling. There was also a rendition of “Tender Mercies,” which was recorded for the recently issued Flag Day soundtrack that Hansard and Vedder’s daughter Olivia Vedder contributed to. The younger Vedder emerged during last night’s set to join her father on the Flag Day song “My Father’s Daughter.”

Friday’s setlist also featured Pearl Jam’s “Porch” and “Corduroy” and covers of The Who’s “I’m One,” Pretenders’ “Precious” and a portion of Prince’s “Purple Rain.” Vedder will perform a regularly scheduled Ohana headlining set this evening and he and Pearl Jam are slated to close the festival on Sunday.
