Goose wrapped up their summer season with a brief but torrid festival set on Sea.Hear.Now’s Park Stage this past Saturday in Asbury Park, NJ. Taking full advantage of its limited time slot in front of a large number of first-timers eager to check out the buzz, Goose unleashed a bevy of hard-hitting fan favorites sure to please new and old fans alike.
Opening with the jam-funk of the Peter Anspach penned “Yeti”, Goose got down and dirty from the first notes, Trevor Weekz slapping his five-string bass as Goose’s faithful flock deflowered the Park stage in what turned out to be one of the weekend’s most energetic pits. “Arcadia”, arguably the most powerful tune in the ever-expanding Goose catalog, would follow as it became abundantly clear from the onset that the Goose was, in fact, loose in Asbury Park for the first time since playing the famed Wonder Bar in 2017. (Note: A scheduled show at the Stone Pony in April 2020 was canceled due to the pandemic.)
Well if I had it all, if I had it all, what life would leave me satisfied …
Just two songs in and already feeling very much like we already had it all, “Madhuvan” was next, a searing but compact live version of the recently released song off the Shenanigans Nite Club LP. “Turned Clouds” took the penultimate spot in the set, Peter Anspach adding never before heard layers of sound as he tickled the keys of the B3 Hammond organ that was just recently added to the ever-expanding corner of his stage left home.

Even if guitarist Rick Mitarotonda couldn’t turn a proverbial cloud to protect the sweat-soaked crowd from the late afternoon sun, he was certainly turning heads with his searing solos and otherworldly guitar chops. The hour-long set’s fifth and final song was an incendiary “Empress of Organos”, percussionist Jeff Arevalo standing out on hand drums alongside drummer Ben Atkind’s fills.
You say it looks like rain today, but we say,
Oh, what a day to be livin’ …
As tough as it might be to estimate how many of the day’s 35,000+ fans were in attendance for this instant classic set, it’s hard to ignore notable fan Tom Marshall‘s Twitter comments which proclaimed, “In a beautiful day at @seahearnow and with so much great music including @PearlJam @theavettbros #PattiSmith, @goosetheband walked away with the Set of the Day!”

(@TomMarshall111) Further evidence of the ripple effect of Goose’s blazing afternoon set could also be found on the late-night stage at The Stone Pony for the official Sea.Hear.Now. after-party. It was here that renowned rock photographer and Sea.Hear.Now. event promoter Danny Clinch shared effusive praise for the indie jam band from Norwalk, CT, even inviting two of its members–Peter Anspach and Jeffrey Arevalo–on stage for a guest sit-in with the Tangiers Blues Band. Add to these accolades the fact that Goose essentially closed their summer tour by opening for Pearl Jam, a bucket list item if ever there was one, and it would certainly seem easy to say this avian quintet “won the day.”
Goose is on a brief hiatus until October 8 when they begin their fall tour with a pair of sold-out weekend shows at Terminal 5 in New York City. For tickets and a full list of tour dates click here.
