Indigo Girls Welcome Ani DiFranco & Lucy Wainwright Roche In Virginia

80

Indigo Girls welcomed Ani DiFranco during the encore of their concert last night at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Vienna, Virginia. The evening also saw frequent collaborator Lucy Wainwright Roche joining the Indigo Girls throughout the preceding main set.

Both DiFranco, who performed an opening set before the headliners, and Wainwright Roche have joined the Indigo Girls at other recent shows. Among Wednesday’s main set’s highlights was a rendition of “The Hammond Song,” which was originally recorded in 1979 by The Roches, a singing group consisting of Wainwright Roche’s mother Suzzy Roche and her two sisters.

DiFranco joined the Indigo Girls (including violinist Lyris Hung) at the start of the encore, bringing along her drummer Terence Higgins and bassist Todd Sickafoose. The finale began with a cover of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery.” A cover of Natalie Merchant’s “Which Side Are You On?” came next, followed by Amy Ray’s “Tear It Down.”

Ray and Emily Saliers then led a celebratory “Happy Birthday To You” in honor of DiFranco’s birthday today. The night ended with the Indigo Girls’ favorite “Closer to Fine.” Watch video footage captured last night at the Wolf Trap:
