Metallica Performs Surprise Concert At Chicago’s Metro

Metallica played the tiny Metro in Chicago on Monday for the first time since 1983. The surprise concert was announced earlier in the day with tickets priced at a mere $20.

Last night’s show came just days after the band pulled off a similar feat at San Francisco’s intimate The Independent club. Metallica reeled off a 16-song setlist heavy on classics from throughout their 40-year career for approximately 1,000 lucky fans in Chicago. Tickets were sold in-person only.

The legendary metal act opened with Kill ‘Em All gem “Whiplash” and then tore through “Ride The Lightning.” Next up was “Harvester Of Sorrow” from 1988’s …And Justice For All. The pairing of “Cyanide” and “Through The Never” was then followed by classics “One” and “Sad But True.”

Monday’s concert continued on with “Moth Into Flame,” one of two songs played from the band’s latest album, 2016’s Hardwired… To Self-Destruct. From there, Metallica played the pulsing “Welcome Home (Sanitarium)” and beloved “For Whom The Bell Tolls” before covering the traditional “Whiskey In The Jar.” The band ended last night’s main set with “Fade To Black” and “Master Of Puppets.” For the encore, the group performed “Hardwired” as well as “Fuel” and “Seek & Destroy.”
