Neal Francis Revisits A Nightmare In “Alameda Apartments” [Video]

Neal Francis has offered another preview of his new album, In Plain Sight, with the second single, “Alameda Apartments”. The sophomore studio LP from the vintage piano player is out on November 5th via ATO Records.

Like much of In Plain Sight, “Alameda Apartments” confronts Francis’ demons head-on. The inspiration for the track came from a nightmare the singer-songwriter had “maybe six years ago” before he got sober.

“I was going through another breakup and getting kicked out of my place, and I had a nightmare about moving into an art-deco apartment that was haunted, where the walls were all shifting around,” Francis said of the single.

The Jason Shevchuk-directed video goes a step further into Francis’ rise-fall-and-redemption story. The making of In Plain Sight found Francis at another low when—upon returning from touring in 2019—he went through a breakup and found himself living in a church. “Alameda Apartments” takes viewers inside a vintage cathedral as Francis dons a sanctimonious robe, hopefully in preparation to forgive his own sins.

“The craziest thing is that I’d never encountered the name ‘Alameda’ at any time in my life prior to that dream,” added Francis. “It’s bizarre that I even remembered it, especially since you don’t dream very often when you’re getting f*cked up.”

“Alameda Apartments” Lyrics

I’m moving to Alameda Apartments
She took all my things and left our place in flames today
As hard as I tried to keep the old place
In the end she wouldn’t let me stay

When I look back at the picture
It’s clear to be seen that everything would end this way
And as much as it hurts it remains to this day that I love her
And that stays just the same

Into the Alameda Apartments
Outside from the pouring rain

They tell me that my new place is haunted
The walls move in the night and I lie awake waiting for the day
It remains to be seen if the ghosts are alright
Or if they want me to move away

I’ve built up my life round the pretense
That belief in a God could save me from this ruin
And as much as it hurts it remains to this day that I love her
And that stays just the same

And people ask if it hurts
That I’ve stooped so low
And in the end I let it go
And as much as it hurts it remains to this day that I love her
And that stays just the same

Into the Alameda Apartments
Outside from the pouring rain
