Parquet Courts will embark on an extensive North American tour early in 2022 to support their forthcoming Sympathy For Life album. Today, the quartet unveiled “Black Widow Spider,” the second single from an LP that drops on Rough Trade Records on October 22, along with a claymation video for the track.
The band’s 2022 tour starts with a run spanning February 27 – March 18 featuring opening act Mdou Moctar. Parquet Courts hits Asheville on February 27 before heading to Georgia for shows in Athens on February 28 and Atlanta on March 2. Dates in Birmingham, Nashville, St. Louis, Lawrence (Kansas), Omaha, Minneapolis, Milwaukee, Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland, Toronto and Montreal follow.
Parquet Courts return to the road on March 31 in Boston ahead of two nights in Brooklyn April 1 – 2 and plays in Washington D.C. and Philadelphia. A West Coast swing includes stops in Seattle on April 22, Vancouver on April 23, Portland on April 25, Oakland on April 27, Los Angeles on April 28, Pomona (California) on April 29 and San Diego on April 30. Tickets for the band’s new shows go on sale this Friday, September 24 at 10 a.m. local time.
Sympathy For Life features 11 tracks largely developed from improvised jams. Parquet Courts worked with producers Rodaidh McDonald and John Parish on the follow-up to 2018’s Wide Awake! “Most of the songs were created by taking long improvisations and moulding them through our own editing,” explained co-frontman Austin Brown. “The biggest asset we have as artists is the band. After 10 years together, our greatest instrument is each other. The purest expression of Parquet Courts is when we are improvising.”
“Black Widow Spider” arrives after the band previously issued Sympathy For Life lead single “Walking At A Downtown Pace.” Parquet Courts tapped Shayne Ehman to direct and animate the “Black Widow Spider” video. “We were inspired by the claymation master Art Clokey,” said Ehman in reference to the Gumby creator. “I wanted the video to feel like it was shot in the 1950’s and so I used very old lenses. One was a brass projection lens from the 1860’s and another was radioactive.”
The new single begins with screaming guitar. “I told [producer] Rodaidh McDonald that I wanted to find a sound that was equal parts Can, Canned Heat and This Heat,” co-frontman A Savage revealed. “He was really into that and probably took some glee in having such a bizarre challenge.”
