Pearl Jam Welcomes Brandi Carlile At Ohana Festival

48

Brandi Carlile was among Pearl Jam‘s guests on Sunday night at the Ohana Festival in Dana Point, California. The Seattle rockers’ headlining performance at Doheny State Beach brought the first weekend to a close and featured a setlist with two live debuts as well as sit-ins from Danny Clinch and Andrew Watt in addition to Carlile’s appearance on “Better Man.”

Pearl Jam’s two-hour performance was just their second public concert since 2018 following an appearance at Sea Hear Now earlier this month in Asbury Park, New Jersey. The band was once again augmented by touring member and former Red Hot Chili Peppers guitarist Josh Klinghoffer.

Eddie Vedder and company began last night’s set with the live premiere of “Retrograde,” a song featured on 2020’s Gigaton. The band then reeled off “Dance Of The Clairvoyants,” “Quick Escape” and “Seven O’Clock” from their latest studio album. Classic “Corduroy” came next along with “Alright,” the evening’s second and final Gigaton live debut.

Pearl Jam continued on with a “Daughter” featuring a nice chunk of fellow Animal track “W.M.A.” Then, photographer Danny Clinch emerged to add harmonica on “Red Mosquito” in a reprise of his Sea Hear Now guest spot before the band went at it alone for Gigaton single “Superblood Wolfmoon.” Later, Carlile came out to help PJ end their main set with “Better Man” following an introduction from Eddie Vedder in which he revealed Brandi referred to some of those on the Ohana lineup as “power bitches.” Eddie said he received permission from Carlile to use the description and added, “Brandi would know about power bitches because it takes one to know one.”

The evening and festival concluded with a four-song encore. Up first was the eighth ever “Let Me Sleep (It’s Christmas Time),” a tune originally released on vinyl sent to Ten Club members in 1991. Pearl Jam then played the beloved “Black” before covering Victoria Williams’ “Crazy Mary” and wrapping up their performance with an “Alive” featuring special guest Andrew Watt on guitar.
