Record Store Day Announces List Of 2021 Black Friday Releases

106

With summer winding down and the holiday season steadily approaching, it has come time for Record Store Day to reveal its list of Black Friday offerings. After 2020 and 2021 saw stunted and staggered Record Store Day releases split up into “Drops” dates, the November 26th celebration of all things vinyl will take place all at once at record stores across the United States.

Though there are hundreds of records, CDs, cassettes, and more headed for shelves the day after Thanksgiving, we here at Live For Live Music compiled a list of releases we thought would appeal most to our audiences. For a complete list of Record Store Day Black Friday releases click here.

Aerosmith 1971: The Road Starts Hear — Boston 1971: A historic early recording of Aerosmith in their rehearsal room – just the band, crew and friends captured on Joe Perry’s tape recorder. This never-before-heard performance showcases the early, raw talent of this future Hall Of Fame band, one year before signing to Columbia Records, and two years before their eponymous debut, which featured many of these songs, including their enduring anthem ”Dream On”.

All The Witches LIVE ON THE INTERNET — All Them Witches are known for their loud and lengthy live shows. 2020 found the band releasing their critically acclaimed album, Nothing As The Ideal. An album release from this band would traditionally be followed by a lengthy 18-month tour across the globe, but due to an international pandemic, the band’s touring plans were brought to a halt. This did not stop All Them Witches from assembling in a studio to broadcast a live set for their fans. The set was roundly received as an amazing performance and fans immediately inquired as to whether or not this show would be available on vinyl.

Angelo Badalamenti Blue Velvet (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) (Deluxe Edition) — Generally considered one of the Top 50 soundtracks of all times, Angelo Badalamenti’s dark original score was complemented by a handful of powerful songs prominently featured in the film, most notably from Roy Orbison and Julee Cruise.  This was the first time Angelo and David Lynch worked together and the pairing has been a fruitful one henceforth.  Both men have been heavily involved in this deluxe edition expansion, contributing to new liner and shaping the audio program, which comes directly off the unedited master tapes. Bobby Vinton’s “Blue Velvet” has also been added to the tracklist for the first time.  Pressed on marbled blue vinyl, and album art features the original art from the Italian movie poster designed by Enzo Sciotti.

Big Brother & The Holding Company (featuring Janis Joplin) Combination of the Two: Live at the Monterey International Pop Festival — Big Brother performed at the Monterey Pop festival on both Saturday June 17 and Sunday June 18, 1967. Both sets are included on this RSD Black Friday release pressed on psychedelic color vinyl in a high-gloss tip-on jacket.

Canned Heat Friends in the Can — First time ever on vinyl, a star-studded album with Canned Heat “friends” like John Lee Hooker, Taj Mahal, Mike Finnigan, Roy Rogers, Walter Trout, along with original Canned Heat alumni Fito de la Parra, Larry Taylor, Harvey Mandel.

Sam Cooke The First Mile of the Way — In celebration of Specialty Records’ 75th anniversary, a new Sam Cooke compilation featuring tracks from his Specialty catalog focusing on his pop-leaning tracks plus the live recordings from the legendary 1955 Shrine Concert that have never been available on vinyl before.

Chick Corea & Lionel Hampton In Concert: Live at MIDEM 1978 — An exciting concert recording featuring two of the jazz greats, Corea and Hamp, live from MIDEM Jazz Gala in Cannes, France. Remastered and reissued on 180g transparent crystal vinyl, the first vinyl pressing in four decades. Pressings feature individual hand-numbering.

David Crosby & Graham Nash Wind On The Water — Wind on the Water is the second album from David Crosby and Graham Nash, originally released on ABC Records in 1975. This RSD Black Friday colored release is the first time since 1980 it’s had a proper re-issue with original artwork.

The Jimi Hendrix Experience Paris 67 — Another amazing release from the official Jimi Hendrix “bootleg label” Dagger Records, this raw, direct to two-track, live recording from the Olympia Theatre in Paris was captured for French national radio and documents the Experience’s triumphant return to France almost one year from the date of their 1966 debut. Recorded on October 9, 1967, The Experience were in top form, roaring out of the gate with “Stone Free,” and following with vibrant renditions of “Hey Joe,” “Fire,” “The Wind Cries Mary” and “Catfish Blues.” “Rock Me Baby” and a compact “Red House” prefaced a grinding, muscular take of “Purple Haze,” followed by “Wild Thing,” replete with a rousing, tongue-in-cheek lead vocal that emphatically closed the show. Released for RSD Black Friday on red and blue mixed vinyl.

Jason Isbell And The 400 Unit Georgia Blue — Jason Isbell tweeted on 11/5/2020 – “If Biden wins Georgia I’m gonna make a charity covers album of my favorite Georgia songs- REM, Gladys Knight, Vic Chesnutt, Allmans, Cat Power, Precious Bryant, Now It’s Overhead, etc… And damn is that gonna be fun”

Little Feat Electrif Lycanthrope: Live at Ultra-Sonic Studios, 1974Nestled between the classic LP releases Dixie Chicken and Feats Don’t Fail Me Now and performed for a small and intimate assembled studio audience, this recording finds Little Feat in their prime, live from Ultrasonic Studios in Hempstead, NY on September 9, 1974.

Often discussed as their ‘best’ line up, this recording features the 1974 version of Little Feat containing Lowell George (Guitar, Vocals), Paul Barrere (Guitar, Vocals), Kenny Gradney (Bass), Richie Hayward (Drums, Vocals) Sam Clayton (Percussion, Vocals), and Bill Payne (Keyboards). With excerpts of this performance only available previously as a legendary ‘70s bootleg, this RSD Black Friday release is the first time the full-length performance is available, directly from the original pre-FM broadcast master tapes, and serves as an excellent introduction to one of rock ‘n’ roll’s best – yet criminally unsung – outfits. The recording captures the band cranking out songs from what are arguably two of their three best studio albums, at the pinnacle of their chemistry.

Motörhead The Lost Tapes Vol.1 (Live In Madrid 1995) — Previously unreleased live album, created from a set of tapes recently discovered in Lemmy’s archive. This show was recorded in Madrid, Spain in 1995 on the Sacrifice tour and sees the band at their ferocious best.

Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, Ray Price Willie, Merle & Ray: Big Hits Live From The Last Of The Breed Tour — They are the “Last of the Breed” — the elder statesmen of classic country music who have inspired artists for decades. No one else sings country music with the passion and purity of Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, and Ray Price, and, in March 2007, these living legends and Country Music Hall of Famers united on stage for a once-in-a-lifetime concert event that was captured for television and recorded to give fans the ultimate concert experience. Backed by the Grammy Award-winning Ray Benson and Asleep at the Wheel and Ray Price’s Cherokee Cowboys, “Willie Merle & Ray: Big Hits from the ‘Last of the Breed’ Tour” presents thirteen of their greatest hits as they performed them on that magical evening.

Lou Reed And Kris Kristofferson The Bottom Line Archive Series: In Their Own Words: With Vin Scelsa — We bring you another historic, once-in-a-lifetime meeting taking place during the winter of ’94 on that venerable Bottom Line stage. Culled from an evening that also included Suzanne Vega and Victoria Williams, there was perhaps no other pairing more perfectly suited to the In Their Own Words platform than this singular meeting of Lou Reed and Kris Kristofferson. As much a course in music history and songwriting as a performance, and years before VH1’s Storytellers series, Allan Pepper and Vin Scelsa’s ITOW series afforded the audience a window into the minds of their favorite songsmiths, in a run that lasted from May of 1990 until March of 2003.

The two songsmiths in question were born and raised in two very different worlds – Lou Reed in the jungles of New York City and Kris Kristofferson in the heart of the Southland. Still, both men demanded total artistic freedom and created raw, brutally honest art that addressed strikingly similar issues of struggles – with loneliness and alienation, addiction and recovery, love and loss, good and evil, vulnerability and hopelessness – painfully aware of contradictions and critical of hypocrisy, painting pictures of characters known or imagined, yet always finding the humanity in our faults and weaknesses during our darkest hours. Through the lens of their music, Lou and Kris view the human condition with a sense of humility and no small amount of humor, which was always close at hand.

Bobby Rush Chicken Heads 50th Anniversary — Bobby Rush’s biggest hit, “Chicken Heads”, is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2021. In recognition of this milestone, Bobby has tasked Gov’t Mule, Christone “Kingfish” Ingram and Buddy Guy to record reimagined versions of the track in their own unique styles. This release will include those three versions of the song, plus a brand new recording of the track from Bobby Rush that’s inspired by over 50 years of performing the song live in front of audiences around the globe.

Tank And The Bangas The Big Outside — Tank and The Bangas have spent all of 2021 working on their new album which will come out in 2022. Two of the most exciting songs are: BIG and Outside

BIG, feat Big Freedia and produced by Peter Cottentale (Chance the Rapper collaborator and one of Chicago’s finest producer).

Outside, co-produced by the band and Jesse Blume, who they met during a 2-day Zoom Songwriting camp with SongWrite Club led by songwriter Andrew Finkelstein.

Thundercat The Golden Age of Apocalypse (10th Anniversary Edition) — An RSD Black Friday reissue to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of GRAMMY-winning artist Thundercat’s 2011 debut album: the record that introduced Thundercat to the world as a truly mercurial talent. Executive produced by his longtime musical partner Flying Lotus and featuring musical contributions from Erykah Badu, Taylor Graves, Austin Peralta, Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, Kamasi Washington, Brandon Coleman, Chris ‘Daddy’ Dave, Shafiq Husayn, Om’Mas Keith and more. Universally acclaimed for its enthusiastic fusion and adventurous spirit, the record embraces ‘electronic music’s futuristic sound-sculpting and reconnects it with the history of African-American pop’ resulting in a ‘densely layered, expertly played, genre-crossing marvel’ (Pitchfork).
