The Disco Biscuits Bring Out Turkuaz’s Shira Elias In Brooklyn

85

The Disco Biscuits headlined the Brooklyn Comes Alive festival at The Brooklyn Mirage on Sunday. The jamtronica quartet welcomed Turkuaz vocalist Shira Elias for a cover of Blondie’s “Rapture” during the first set.

The Disco Biscuits — guitarist Jon Gutwillig, bassist Marc Brownstein, keyboardist Aron Magner and drummer Allen Aucoin — kicked off the first frame with the staple “Helicopters.” The band found their way into a spirited trance jam laced with overdriven riff work from Gutwillig and awash with synth from Magner as Brownstein and Aucoin grooved on the four on the floor beat. The relatively new tune, “Running Into The Night,” emerged from “Helicopters.” tDB then dropped into a minor groove signaling “Rapture.” Brownie welcomed Elias to the stage who delivered a spot on Debbie Harry vocal performance on the Blondie classic. The Brownstein-composed “42” would close out the four-song seamless first set.

The Disco Biscuits launched the second set with a bust out of “Pilin’ It High,” last played on December 29, 2018 in Philadelphia for a gap of 83 shows as per Phantasy Tour. Aucoin reeled off an impressive rapid-fire beat as Barber and Magner trickled in before Gutwillig led the band through the lyrics. A galloping jam would ensue with Barber providing some crunchy guitar licks over an undercurrent of electric piano from Magner before dropping into a reggae-tinged groove that ramped up into the classic “I-Man” which encompassed the newer composition “M1.” Next, Bisco headed into “Evolve” before bookending the performance with a “Helicopters” reprise.

Watch video of the show below, Elias joins the band at around the 36:08 mark:
