Billy Strings dusted off a cover of Cher’s “Believe” on Sunday during the final show of a four-night run at The Mission Ballroom in Denver. Strings hadn’t performed the 1998 hit since December 15, 2019.
“Meet Me At The Creek” got Sunday’s concert underway. Billy then led his band featuring bassist Royal Masat, banjoist Billy Failing and mandolinist Jarrod Walker through the traditional “I’ll Remember You, Love, In My Prayers” before turning to his recently released Renewal album for “Love & Regret.” Next came a cover of Jeff Austin’s “Run Down” along with just the third live version of Renewal standout “Heartbeat Of America.” Later, Strings capped the set by working Jerry Reed’s “The Likes Of Me” into “Thunder,” a song featuring words by Grateful Dead lyricist Robert Hunter.
Last night’s second set started with originals “Red Daisy,” “Watch It Fall” and “Love Like Me.” Strings then performed a cover of New Grass Revival’s “Whisper My Name” before returning to his own material for “In The Morning Light” and “Away From The Mire.” The frame continued with a seamless sequence in which “Long Forgotten Dream” bled into the spacey “Spinning,” which the band jammed into Black Sabbath’s “Planet Caravan” before reviving “Believe” after nearly two years on the shelf. Billy ended the frame with “Slow Train” and said farewell to the Denver faithful with a “Freeborn Man” encore.
