Billy Strings Covers Cher, Black Sabbath During Final Night At Denver’s Mission Ballroom [Videos/Full Audio]

Billy Strings returned to Denver, CO on Sunday for his fourth and final sold-out show at Mission Ballroom. Following a raucous Saturday night that saw an appearance from String Cheese Incident‘s Bill Nershi, Strings had one final offering for the Denver faithful.

Strings began the night with a cut from 2017’s Turmoil & Tinfoil, “Meet Me at the Creek”. A cover of William “Billy” Hayes‘ “I’ll Remember You, Love, in My Prayers” set up “Love & Regret”, which appeared on Strings’ latest hit studio effort, Renewal. “Run Down”, a tribute to the late Jeff Austin, came next before another Renewal original, “Heartbeat of America“.

The second half of set one included a run through Dan Fogelberg‘s “Along The Road”, Roy Acuff‘s “Streamline Cannonball”, Strings original “Show Me the Door”, and Jerry Reed‘s “The Likes of Me”. The Reed cover then segued into a special set-closing rendition of “Thunder”, the cross-generational collaboration featuring words by Robert Hunter and music by Billy Strings, which originally debuted during the Billy & The Kids Grateful Mahalo streams earlier this year.

Strings returned for a second set focused on original material beginning with the Renewal track “Red Daisy”. Two tracks from 2019’s Grammy award-winning album, Home, followed with “Watch It Fall” and “Love Like Me”. Billy Strings, Billy Failing (banjo/vocals), Royal Masat (bass/vocals), and Jarrod Walker (mandolin/vocals/guitar) then took a shot at New Grass Revival‘s “Whisper My Name” before heading back to the originals “In the Morning Light” and “Away From the Mire”.

Home‘s “Long Forgotten Dream” led to another Turmoil & Tinfoil track, “Spinning”, which the band segued into a cover of Black Sabbath‘s “Planet Caravan”. Strings then dug deep into his cover arsenal for a bust-out of Cher‘s “Believe” before capping set two with “Slow Train”, from Strings’ 2016 self-titled EP. After an encore break, Billy Strings returned to the Mission Ballroom stage and put the cherry on top of a successful weekend with Keith Allison‘s “Freeborn Man”.
