Billy Strings Debuts Pink Floyd Cover In Denver

106

Billy Strings debuted a Pink Floyd cover during Thursday’s concert at The Mission Ballroom in Denver. The setlist for the guitarist’s first of four nights at the venue was also highlighted by a rare Beatles cover, his band’s first take on “The Preacher And The Bear” and four songs from Billy’s recently released Renewal album.

Billy started the show solo with his eighth live version of “Guitar Peace,” an instrumental the guitarist wrote and recorded for inclusion on his Grammy-winning 2019 LP, Home. Bassist Royal Masat, mandolinist Jarrod Walker and banjoist Billy Failing then emerged to back Strings on their first “Fearless” cover. Pink Floyd originally released the song on 1971’s Meddle.

The quartet then worked an extended take on Bill Emerson’s “Home Of The Red Fox” into Renewal standout “Fire On My Tongue.” Strings went on to fit an instrumental “Last Train To Clarksville” within “I’m Still Here,” which bled into “Tipper.” Billy returned to Renewal for “Wargasm” and followed with the traditional “Will You Be Loving Another Man” before ending the first set by pairing his own “Thirst Mutilator” with a quick romp through Widespread Panic’s “All Time Low.”

Last night’s second set began with the gorgeous “Taking Water” from Home and upbeat Renewal instrumental “Ice Bridges.” Next up was the recently debuted Renewal track “Nothing’s Working,” which Strings wrote with Lindsay Lou. The four-piece then covered Flatt & Scruggs’ “Doin’ My Time” and jammed “Living Like An Animal” into “Me And My Uncle.” An emotional highpoint followed as Billy led his band through their first cover of the Hunter/Garcia ballad “To Lay Me Down” since February.

“Things” were on display towards the end of the set as the original “Doin’ Things Right” came ahead of The Beatles’ “Things We Said Today.” Billy Strings debuted and last played the latter on February 2, 2020 at the Gem & Jam Festival. Masat handled lead vocals on “Things We Said Today.” An expansive, 14-minute “Hide And Seek” brought the second set to a close. The quartet returned for a “The Preacher And The Bear” encore. While Strings previously performed the George Fairman-penned song solo while opening for I’m With Her and during a Family Strings run with his dad, Terry Barber, last night marked the first time the quartet covered “The Preacher And The Bear.”
