Brian Kastan Releases New Improvisational Album ‘Free Blues’

131

Guitarist Brian Kastan released an improvisational new album entitled Free Blues. The album is the 33rd issued by Kastan, who is also an accomplished electric/fretless bass player, composer, author, and digital landscape photographer.

A prolific multi-instrumentalist, Kastan made his mark with original sounding improvisations and composing style, self-developed hybrid fingerpicking technique on guitar, and laying down big fat bass grooves and electric bass improvisations.

Featuring 10 improvised tracks rooted in the blues form, Free Blues was recorded by Brian Kastan & the Free Blues Band Featuring Jay Brunka & Dave Berger. The trio of Kastan (guitar), Brunka (bass) and Berger (drums) recorded the album on March 31 at Continuum Fine Art and Photography in Greenwood Lake, New York. Brian Kastan & the Free Blues Band will return to Continuum Fine Art and Photography to perform a concert on October 30.

Free Blues presents Kastan’s improvisational approach to playing traditional blues styles. The concept of the album is to play standard blues feels and forms while playing in a new modern rhythmic and harmonic perspective. Free Blues consists of hard-hitting steady bass and drum grooves, while Kastan’s guitar floats into new abstract blues melodies and riffs.
