Dave Matthews Revives ‘Little Red Bird’ In Albuquerque

159

Dave Matthews dusted off “Little Red Bird” last night in Albuquerque for its tour debut and first play at a Dave Matthews Band concert since October 18, 2015. Matthews performed the Big Whiskey And The Groogrux King bonus track solo to start the encore on Monday at Isleta Amphitheater.

“One Sweet World” opened last night’s DMB concert. The band then worked “So Much To Say” into “Anyone Seen The Bridge” and “Too Much.” Dave Matthews Band went on to play material from throughout their career for the remainder of their 18-song main set, including “#41,” “What Would You Say,” “What You Are” and “Grey Street.” The septet also covered Peter Gabriel’s “Sledgehammer” and delivered partial takes on Huey Lewis & The News’ “I Want A New Drug” and Prince’s “Sexy M.F.” out of “Jimi Thing” as they’ve done often this tour.

Matthews returned to the stage by his lonesome to begin Monday’s encore. Dave told the crowd he hoped everyone had a good Indigenous Peoples’ Day before telling the audience a story:

“I was on an island in the middle of the Indian Ocean like 20 years ago. There was this tiny little bird — there was a bunch of tiny little birds — but there was one, I think, that was missing its leg. It might have been two, but I only saw one at a time. And this tiny bird was surviving with this one little stomph leg and I thought it was a magical thing. Every morning we’d go and we’d eat our breakfast and this little bird would come. So, I thought I’d write a song about it and it turned into a song about something else. Anyway, I hope you all had a good day today. And I hope we can always remember that it’s okay to honor our history even if it’s difficult. The truth is easy it just doesn’t always taste so good.”

Dave then performed “Little Red Bird” before the rest of the band came out for the “Don’t Drink The Water” finale. Next up for Dave Matthews Band is a show in Rogers, Arkansas on Wednesday.
