Gov’t Mule Previews ‘Heavy Load Blues’ With Behind The Scenes Footage Of “Make It Rain” [Watch]

Gov’t Mule has shared a behind the scenes video documenting the recording of “Make It Rain”, which will appear on the band’s forthcoming album, Heavy Load Blues, due out November 12th via Fantasy Records. This follows last week’s release of “Locked Down“, a video featuring interviews with members of the band discussing lockdowns and dealing with the pandemic, as well as the “Snatch It Back And Hold It” > “Hold It Back” > “Snatch It Back And Hold It” video from earlier in the month.

Clocking in at almost five minutes, the video sees members Warren Haynes (guitar/vocals), Matt Abts (drums), Danny Louis (keys/guitar/vocals), and Jorgen Carlsson (bass) recording the Tom Waits original at The Power Station New England in Waterford, CT. This behind the scenes clip highlights the live-to-tape analog recording process and provides insight on conversations between Haynes and his co-producer John Paterno regarding the unique artistic elements of the track.

While the members of Gov’t Mule worked hard at making the track their own, one of the most unique aspects of the recording happened without any intent by the band.

“The ironic thing that happened was… I had my old Fender spring reverb tank sitting on the floor back here when we were recording,” Haynes explained, pointing to the back of the studio. “We were getting a lot of… I guess some sort of RF, like radio interference or something that was triggering these sounds coming from the reverb. And it’s like… It sounds like a thunderstorm in the middle of us recording a song called ‘Make It Rain.’”

Haynes then reflected on the conversation between he and Paterno while clips of the two laughing in amazement show on screen.

“He’s like, ‘Oh, we have to keep that. Are you kidding me?… You should’ve been in [the control room] hearing that on the other side.’ He said it just sounded like a record. It sounded like we were playing it during a thunderstorm.”

The video continues with the last bit of the song, including a bluesy solo from Haynes and the soulful refrain, “make it rain.”
