Pigeons Playing Ping Pong Welcome Tomo Fujita & West End Blend Horns At Flocktoberfest

Pigeons Playing Ping Pong kicked off their two-day Flocktoberfest run at the State Theatre in Portland, Maine on Friday. The quartet welcomed frequent collaborator, Berklee College Of Music professor and guitarist Tomo Fujita, as well as the West End Blend Horns over the course of the weekend.

PPPP launched Flocktoberfest on Friday, which also marked the band’s fall tour opener, with the intro to “Funk E Zekiel” before heading through “Burning Up My Time” and “Lost In Line.” Fujita joined in for first set closer, “Henrietta.” Tomo would take the first solo beginning with some choice licks and build things up before kicking it over to Pigeons guitarist Jeremy Schon. Fujita also came out towards the end of the second set, adding to a wild rave jam on “Sunny Day.”

Saturday saw PPPP opening with “Distant Times” followed by “Penguins.” The quartet then finished what they started on Friday with the rest of “Funk E Zekiel.” Next, Pigeons welcomed the horn section from openers West End Blend for the final three songs of the first frame: “Fortress,” “Whoopie” and “Live It Up,” with Fujita joining in once again on the set closer.

The Fujita collaboration continued in the second set on “The Liquid” which contained an extended blues jam. Tomo would stick around for “F.U.” which also saw the return of the West End Blend Horns who also helped PPPP close out the second set with “Schwanthem” sans Fujita. Tomo returned for the encore, a bust out of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Lenny,” last time played by PPPP on NYE 2018. Pigeons Playing Ping Pong then went it alone on “Yo Soy Fiesta” to bring Flocktoberfest to a close.
