Pimps Of Joytime Announce First Album In Four Years, Share Lead Single, “Lesson” [Listen]

Pimps of Joytime have announced a forthcoming album, titled Reachin’ Up, due out on February 4th, 2022. Alongside the album announcement, the band has released its first single, “Lesson”, which hit music streaming platforms and YouTube on Friday.

Totalling ten tracks, Reachin’ Up promises to deliver undeniably funkified dance music that mirrors the diversity of the band’s fanbase. Since starting work on the album back in 2019, frontman Brian J has focused on blending New Orleans and Bay Area funk elements with Brooklyn’s DIY ethos, something that has helped Pimps of Joytime stand out from the crowd over the band’s previous four albums.

“The process of making this album started in 2019,” said J in a press release. “I was on a bit of a break from Pimps of Joytime and just began laying some grooves and chord progressions down. By the time Covid hit, I had some solid sketches in place, and with my newly found free time, I dug in on refining those recordings. I am very excited for this album to get out there into the world! A spirit of love and exaltation was my guiding influence throughout the creative process, and it is my hope that folks will come away with that feeling after listening.”

That spirit of love is ever-present on the album’s lead single, “Lesson”. Over the song’s 4:10 runtime, Brian J pushes motivational and inspiring lyrics with feel-good vibrations, all wrapped within a hard-hitting dance track. Disco-vibes and psychedelic undertones percolate through the breakbeat drums, percussion, and thumping bassline, while the lyrics on “Lesson” speak to letting go of the things in life that may hold the listener back.

“The majority of the lyrics of ‘Lesson’ were written in a stream consciousness, in the studio,” J explained. “I later did some refining and editing with the help of Carol C. I am pretty much offering myself advice in and through the song. Realizing some things never get resolved, you just gotta let it all go, Buddha style!”
