Tedeschi Trucks Band Welcomes Tash Neal At Beacon Theatre

Tedeschi Trucks Band delivered the penultimate concert of their seven-show Beacon Theatre residency in New York City on Friday. TTB welcomed singer-songwriter and guitarist Tash Neal for an Elmore James blues classic toward the end of the second set which kicked off with an acoustic section.

Tedeschi Trucks Band — guitarist/vocalist Susan Tedeschi, guitarist Derek Trucks, drummers Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell and Isaac Eady, bassist Brendan Boone, keyboardist Gabe Dixon, vocalists Mike Mattison, Mark Rivers and Alecia Chakour along with the horn section of Elizabeth Lea, Ephraim Owens and Kebbi Williams — got things underway with “Learn How To Love” off their Grammy-winning debut album, Revelator. The title track to the band’s 2016 album Let Me Get By followed ahead of “I’m Gonna Be There.”

The band then got into cover material beginning with Bessie Smith’s “Gin House Blues” followed by Willie Nelson’s “Somebody Pick Up My Pieces.” TTB returned to original work with “Laugh About It” which prefaced Joe Reynolds’ “Outside Woman Blues.” Susan’s solo cut “Just Won’t Burn” from her 2002 album of the same then came ahead of Billy Taylor’s “I “Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Free” to close out the set.

Tedeschi Trucks Band would go acoustic to start off the second frame beginning with Susan sans guitar leading the stripped-down outfit through Revelator’s “These Walls” which also featured some tasty acoustic runs from Derek. Mike Mattison then fronted the band on acoustic guitar for The Rolling Stones’ “Dear Doctor.” TTB debuted the Stones song earlier in the residency in an electric format but the acoustic affair at the Beacon was closer to the Beggars Banquet original complete with slide work from Trucks. Derek would stay on slide for Bob Dylan’s “Lord Protect The Child,” which featured a powerful vocal performance from both Tedeschi and the backing vocalists. Keyboardist Gabe Dixon then led the way on the first Elmore James song of the night, “Done Somebody Wrong,” to conclude the acoustic segment.

Three originals would follow: “Simple Things,” “Just As Strange” and “Made Up Mind” ahead of a pairing of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and Neil Young’s “Helpless.” While “Angel From Montgomery” has been in the TTB repertoire for some time, the band has linked it with Jerry Garcia and Robert Hunter’s “Sugaree” in the past although they unveiled the Neil-penned CSNY classic as “Angel From Montgomery’s” partner during this Beacon run.

Derek and Susan then welcomed Tash Neal for Elmore James’ “The Sky Is Crying.” Susan led the way through the first couple verses before Dixon took over on some barrelhouse piano. Tedeschi then reeled off a smokin’ solo on the front pickup of her Gibson Les Paul before heading back into the verse. Next, Tash tore things up on his Fender Telecaster before Derek destroyed on the slide and Tedeschi brought the blues classic home. TTB would close out the set with a pairing of “I Want More” and Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.” Tedeschi Trucks Band encored with Susan’s “The Feeling Music Brings.”
