Phil Lesh concluded his nine-show residency at Port Chester, NY’s The Capitol Theatre on Sunday with a special Halloween show. The rotating Phil Lesh & Friends lineup featured Dawes members Taylor and Griffin Goldsmith, amongst others.

Sunday’s show marked the end of the third, three-night run at The Cap in October for the Grateful Dead bassist, though the 81-year-old showed no signs of slowing down. In addition to the Goldsmiths, Lesh was joined by his son GrahameTrevor Menear, Larry CampbellLee PardiniNicki Bluhm, and Teresa Williams.

The show started off with a properly exploratory “Playing In The Band” followed by “Tennesse Jed”. Phil and Friends dipped into the catalog of The Band for “This Wheel’s On Fire” before the Jerry Garcia Band staple, Marvin Gaye‘s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)”. Following those quick hits, the ensemble settled in for a longer stay on an upbeat “Bertha” before Blind Willie Johnson‘s “Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning” closed the first set.

Returning for the second frame, Phil Lesh & Friends opened with a sublime pairing of “Scarlet Begonias” and “Sugaree” that stretched well over 30 minutes of lengthy improvisation. Following a slight break in the action, playing resumed with the slow build of “Here Comes Sunshine”. This rolled into the fellow downtempo energy of “Standing On The Moon” ahead of Lesh’s signature “Unbroken Chain”.

The angelic opening of “Terrapin Station” came following the massive “Unbroken Chain”, setting the stage for a transition into a standalone “I Know You Rider” as Lesh proved once again that he plays by his own rules. Ellie Greenwich‘s “River Deep, Mountain High” would close set two.

It wouldn’t be any kind of Dead-centric Halloween show without Warren Zevon‘s “Werewolves of London”, which arrived in the first encore slot before a “Ripple” sing-along sent everyone home.
