Phoebe Bridgers Reimagines Tom Waits’ “Day After Tomorrow” For Annual Christmas Cover [Listen]

61

Phoebe Bridgers has released her 2021 Christmas cover, an enchanting reimagination of Tom Waits‘ “Day After Tomorrow”. This continues a years-long tradition of sharing holiday covers and follows 2020’s take on Merle Haggard‘s “If We Make It Through December“.

Bridgers’ rendition of “Day After Tomorrow”—which originally appeared on Waits’ 2004 album Real Gone—hears the songstress delivering her impassioned vocals over a grand piano. Several musicians joined Bridgers for this recording, inlcuding Harrison WhitfordMarshall VoreRob MooseWill Maclellan, and a full choir.

Produced by Phoebe, Tony Berg, and Ethan Gruska, “Day After Tomorrow” stays mostly true to the original while adding some of her folk and indie flare. The addition of a choir adds sonic layers, as stringed instruments and bells give the track a holiday feel. Though very few can match Waits’ baritone vocals, Bridgers gracefully channels a higher register for the contemplative lyrics.
