On Saturday, Connecticut-based jam quartet Eggy took the stage at The Capitol Theatre in support of Twiddle‘s Frendsgiving festivities.

Eggy has had a big year of growth performing successively larger shows, opening for (and sitting in with) established touring acts, and steadily debuting an ever-growing list of new songs. While the band has performed at the Cap’s adjoining bar, Garcia’s, on various occasions—including a Frendsgiving pre-show in 2019—Saturday’s set marked a meaningful milestone: Eggy’s graduation to the historic theater’s main stage.

Continuing a trend that has helped earn the band new fans at every gig, Eggy kept The Capitol Theatre crowd on its toes with a set packed with exciting new material, deep jams, and a creative, set-closing cover of a new Big Thief track released just this month. Expanding their sound and repertoire yet again, Eggy’s Jake Brownstein (pedal steel/guitar/vocals), Dani Battat (keyboards/vocals), Mike Goodman (bass/vocals), and Alex Bailey (drums/vocals) kicked off their hour-long set with back-to-back debuts featuring Brownstein on pedal steel: the instrumental “Beaver Creek” and the cleverly unpunctual “Nearly Always Late”.

Another pair of 2021-vintage tunes followed with the funky, synth-heavy groove of “One Stop Shop” and the lyrically compelling “Sweaters For Strawmen”. From there it was time to explore, as the band took fan-favorite “Today and Tomorrow” out for a sprawling journey that swelled, exploded, mellowed, and reverberated in dynamic cycles over the course of 20+ entrancing minutes. Finally, with time for one more, Eggy once again pulled a new cover from the contemporary music world with a lush reimagining of the title track from Big Thief’s new album, “Time Escaping”. (Check out the original, too. It’s quite different, but just as engaging).
