King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Share ‘Butterfly 3001’ Remixes With Peaches, The Scientist, More [Listen]

King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard will revisit their 2021 album Butterfly 3000 with a collection of remixes and reworked tracks called Butterfly 3001. Out via the band’s own KGLW label on January 21st, 2022, the Australian psych-rockers previewed the collection on Tuesday with remixes by Peaches and The Scientist.

Released back in June, Butterfly 3000 marked yet another sonic departure for the chameleon indie outfit. The album’s bedrock was formed by strictly major keys and thick layers of synthesizers as dreamy soundscapes enveloped listeners in a vintage aesthetic. Now, with a new slate of remixes from artists including DJ Shadow, The Flaming Lips, DāM-FunK, Geneva Jacuzzi, Peaking Lights, Confidence Man, Kaitlyn Aurelia Smith, and more, those artistic shifts are explored even further.

“We’ve put off doing a remix album for a long time,” King Gizzard’s Joey Walker stated. “Maybe it was conscious, maybe it wasn’t. But it’s happening now. That’s not to say that Butterfly 3000 makes the most sense to remix. It might seem like the obvious one, but it’s not. Yes it’s electronic. But so is a fridge. Have you tried to dance to Butterfly? It’s hard. It ties your shoelaces together. It’s duplicitous in its simplicity. But Butterfly 3001 expands on this. It also deviates and obliterates. We’re honored to have such esteemed people go to work on these songs. We hope you love this album as much as we do. See you in DA CLUB!!!”

Canadian producer Peaches takes on the titular “Butterfly 3000”, transforming it into “Neu Butterfly 3000″. Indeed, the song receives a neo revival as the sonic integrity makes the jump from retro to futuristic.

“[I] wanted to make this remix sound like a lizard,” Peaches said of the track. “Slippery wet and scaly dry. Something that wiggles through wide open spaces… with slits for eyeballs…. And danceable.”

Dub wizard The Scientist takes a more subtle approach to “Shanghai”, keeping most of the structural integrity of the track while still adding some unmistakable reggae brushstrokes.

“I’ve always enjoyed being able to apply my dub mixing techniques to music outside of the typical ‘reggae mold,’” The Scientist said of his contribution. “The music of KGLW, and specifically the song ‘Shanghai’, provided me with the perfect landscape to be able to create something sonically rich and exciting for the listener. KGLW fans and dub-reggae fans, alike, will enjoy this song very much.”
