Trophy Eyes have shared new single ‘Bittersweet’, their second for the year after returning with ’27 Club’ back in October.
Much like their previous single, ‘Bittersweet’ melds the band’s hardcore and punk roots with alt-pop and new wave influences, vocalist John Floreani crooning above a bed of icy synth pads and electronic percussion on its verses before the band rip into a soaring, stadium-sized chorus.
“There are no rules in love. I know this now but for my teenage self, that was too much to comprehend. Bittersweet is a song about feeling someone slowly slip away, and the cathartic, long winded conversations said in total silence – sometimes with just a single expression,” Floreani explains.
“It was my first experience of inadequacy and total loss of control. I was not enough and I drove the person that I loved into someone’s more capable arms. I’m not sure that I was even in love, but I was certainly desperate to hold on to the one thing still linking me to my childhood. My first taste of adult life was a bitter introduction to how familiar I would come to be with loneliness.”
With ’27 Club’ and ‘Bittersweet’ marking the band’s first new music in two years, Trophy Eyes are currently readying their fourth studio album for release in 2022, with details still on the light side thus far. When it arrives, it’ll follow the band’s acclaimed 2018 LP The American Dream.
