Robert Plant and Alison Krauss were the latest guests to appear on NPR Music‘s Tiny Desk (Home) Concert video series. The musicians performed three songs off their recent album, Raise The Roof, from Sound Emporium in Nashville, TN, the studio at which they tracked this latest record.

With the help of a backing band consisting of Jay Bellerose (percussion), JD McPherson (guitar/vocals), Dennis Crouch (upright bass), Stuart Duncan (guitar/ukulele/vocals), and Viktor Krauss (bass/guitar), the septet started things off with “Can’t Let Go”. Originally written by Randy Weeks and performed by Lucinda Williams, Plant and Krauss’ rendition took on a surf rock feel, replete with reverb-laden guitar licks and indulgent vocals from the duo.

“That’s a song I like singing,” said Plant after the first cut before explaining the story behind the next tune, Bobby Moore and the Rhythm Aces‘ “Searching For My Love”. “We’re really glad they’re not here to be better than we are,” he concluded, just as Viktor Krauss strummed the opening lines. Staying true to the album version, Plant held down the lyrical sections on the verses while Krauss, Duncan, and McPherson handled the choruses. With time for one more, the seven-piece outfit dove into “Trouble With My Lover”, initially penned by Allen Toussaint. Bellerose led the group into this one, which featured Krauss’ lead vocals over tense instrumentation. Juxtaposed with the previous tune, Plant sang the chorus on “Trouble With My Lover” while adding some percussive accents with a pair of maracas.

“What a remarkable sight to see the reunion of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss gathered around a couple of microphones in Nashville. It’s been 14 years since their surprising and remarkable album Raising Sand and now they’re back,” exclaimed Tiny Desk (Home) Concert producer Bob Boilen in the video’s description.
