The White Stripes have shared an archival video of “Screwdriver” from their June 7th, 2001 appearance on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn.
Filmed less than a month before the release of White Blood Cells, the Stripes’ third album, this occasion marked the band’s first-ever U.S. late-night television performance. “Screwdriver”, which appeared on the Detroit duo’s debut, 1999 self-titled record, remained a setlist staple throughout Jack and Meg White‘s time together and has stayed in rotation during the former’s solo career.

This particular rendition arrived with all the distorted guitar, timely drumming, and intensive vocal work that defined the early years of The White Stripes. Their chemistry took center stage during this telling, with a nod or flick of the wrist from Jack triggering a refocusing of Meg’s attention. As was the case with many live takes on “Screwdriver”, Jack teased another tune halfway through the song, interjecting “Your Southern Can Is Mine” right after the buildup section. “Your Southern Can Is Mine”, originally written by Blind Willie McTell, initially found a spot on the Stripes’ sophomore album, De Stijl.
