Daniel Donato interviewed Dave Simonett of Trampled By Turtles for the latest episode of JamBase partner Osiris Media’s Lost Highway podcast. The conversation took place backstage at the Columbia Speedway Entertainment Center in Cola, South Carolina this past June, where Donato was opening for Trampled by Turtles.

Simonett and Donato start by discussing how Dave made it through the start of the pandemic. The TbT guitarist/vocalist revealed he purchased land in Northern Minnesota where he hung with his family. “We’ve been clearing trees and camping out,” Simonett explained. Dave went on to talk about parenthood and how every year his kids grow up have become his favorite age. “It’s this beautiful time period before they reach the teenage years,” he added.

The pair then spoke about the “imposter syndrome” and how they are many ways to get down on yourself. From there Simonett recalled the history of Trampled by Turtles and noted the band’s long history “is a genuine accomplishment.” Dave stated a key to their longevity is that, “everybody’s got to be able to live as much of their own lives as possible while in this group. I think that’s what makes people comfortable.”

Simonett discussed how “missing his kids” is the toughest part of touring for him. Dave and Daniel then talked music and the process of songwriting, embracing individuality and Simonett’s philosophy on covers. “I love playing other people’s music,” Dave said. “There’s something light about it.” Other topics hit upon were the importance of the first album you hear from a band, performing in various side projects, how the break from touring due to COVID-19 sparked creativity for Trampled by Turtles and the necessity of taking chances on stage even if it leads to the occasional mistake.
