A new documentary on the late Ronnie James Dio is headed for release this year, as confirmed by the metal singer’s widow/manager Wendy Dio. In a recent interview, Wendy detailed the documentary for music journalist Lucas Jordan.
“It’s coming out [later this] year,” Wendy told Lucas. “I [recently] saw the first cut of it. It was very emotional. It’s very different from [Dio’s autobiography Rainbow in the Dark]. ‘Cause the book finishes in 1986, with Ronnie playing Madison Square Garden. But the documentary goes all the way through his life till the end. And it was very emotional. I was watching it with my publicist and a person from BMG, who are funding the documentary. And we all cried. It was very emotional. But it’s really interesting and really good.”
Set to appear in the documentary are Rob Halford, Jack Black, Lita Ford, Dio’s Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler, and more. SiriusXM DJ and former That Metal Show host Eddie Trunk will narrate the yet-untitled documentary alongside author Mick Wall, who put the finishing touches on Ronnie’s 2021 autobiography, Rainbow In The Dark, which the metal singer was working on up until his death from stomach cancer on May 16th, 2010 at 67. The project, produced by BMG and Wendy, will mark the first Dio documentary authorized by his family.

“There’s a bunch of stuff from [old] Super 8 [tapes] and some other stuff,” Wendy told Eddie Trunk last August. “There’s fantastic interviews with all kinds of different people about when they were working with Ronnie or what they were doing at the time, maybe supporting Ronnie. It’s totally different to the book.”
