Umphrey’s McGee took the stage in Newport, Kentucky on Thursday without guitarist Jake Cinninger, who missed the show due to a family emergency. The rest of the band loaded the setlist at PromoWest Pavilion at Ovation with classics and rare covers and teamed with old friend Michael “Mad Dog” Mavridoglou for three songs during last night’s concert.
Guitarist Brendan Bayliss, percussionist Andy Farag, keyboardist Joel Cummins, drummer Kris Myers and bassist Ryan Stasik opened by working “No Comment” within “Der Bluten Kat” in making for a 26-minute sequence. The five musicians delivered an adventurous run through “2×2” next that incorporated both pretty major-key jamming and an evil-tinged excursion. Instrumental oldie “Kimble” followed before UM paired “Puppet String” and “Hajimemashite” to finish the set. Mavridoglou made his first appearance of the night to add trumpet to “Haji.”
“Slacker,” one of many tunes played in Newport that predates Cinninger joining the band, began the second set. Mad Dog then emerged on trumpet for Umphrey’s first cover of John Scofield’s “A Go Go” since April 27, 2017. The frame rolled on with jam vehicle “Wappy Sprayberry” and fan favorite “Front Porch.” Mad Dog returned during “Front Porch” to conduct a jam. Umphrey’s followed Mavridoglou’s final guest spot of the evening by dusting off their take on Radiohead’s “Weird Fishes/Arpeggi,” which was last played on February 1, 2018. Bayliss then tore up a set-closing “August.”
Umphrey’s kicked off the encore with the Beck classic “Debra.” The band hadn’t covered the song from the 1999 Beck album Midnite Vultures since December 14, 2018. Last night’s concert came to a close with an “In The Kitchen” that incorporated “Half Delayed.” Both “In The Kitchen” and the earlier “Front Porch” included shout outs to Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Cinninger is expected back tonight for UM’s show at The Fillmore Detroit.
