Billy Strings Performs From The Capitol Theatre Balcony

93

Billy Strings returned to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, New York on Sunday to conclude a four-show run billed as “Deja Tu — Return to the Experiment.” Strings made the most of the venue as both the guitarist and mandolinist Jarrod Walker dueled from opposing Presidental Suites within the balcony for a two-song portion of last night’s first set.

Each night of the run saw Strings reprise ESP experiments conducted by Dr. Stanley Krippner during the Grateful Dead’s February 1971 visit to the venue and pulled off again last February as part of Strings’ audience-less livestream concerts at The Cap. Greensky Bluegrass mandolinist Paul Hoffman was the receiver for last night’s experiment. An image of an owl was displayed before Strings and his band took the stage for their final set of the run. Crowd members and those watching the livestream were encouraged to send the image mentally to Hoffman in Denver.

Strings and bandmates Jarrod Walker, banjoist Billy Failing and bassist Royal Masat kicked off last night’s show by pairing “Fire On My Tongue” and “Must Be Seven.” Next came “Hellbender” before the band worked “Fire Line” into the traditional “Reuben’s Train.” Then, Strings and Walker left the stage and took spots on opposing sides of the balcony for performances of “End Of The Rainbow” and “Running The Route.” Billy and Jarrod went back to their normal positions in time for “Home,” the title track from Strings’ Grammy-winning 2019 studio album. “Highway Hypnosis” brought last night’s first set to a close.

The quartet began the final set of the run with Home standout “Taking Water.” Strings and his bandmates then treated fans to covers of Jerry Reed’s “The Likes Of Me,” John Hartford’s “All Fall Down” and Jimmy Martin’s “Tennessee.” Originals “Nothing’s Working” and “Doin’ Things Right” followed. Billy then led his troupe through a gorgeous “Peggy-O” before a lengthy “Hide & Seek” ended the frame. A big surprise came as the encore with the four-piece serving up a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “U.S. Blues.” The band had only played the From The Mars Hotel gem once prior on September 30, 2018 as per BillyBase.
