David Byrne Announces Final ‘American Utopia’ Broadway Extension

David Byrne has announced the final extension of his American Utopia Broadway show at New York, NY’s St. James Theatre. The long-running stage show will host its final event on Sunday, April 3rd, at 3:00 p.m. ET.

“American Utopia has its final extension through April 3 ONLY,” the show wrote in a post to Instagram on Monday. “Don’t miss your chance to see this ‘flat-out masterpiece’ at the St. James Theatre.”

David Byrne’s American Utopia originally hit Broadway’s Hudson Theatre in 2019 before the COVID-19 pandemic forced an 18-month shutdown. Upon its return on October 17th, 2021, Byrne and his expansive cast consisting of Jacquelene Acevedo, Gustavo Di Dalva, Daniel Freedman, Chris Giarmo, Tim Keiper, Tendayi Kuumba, Karl Mansfield, Mauro Refosco, Stéphane San Juan, Angie Swan, and Bobby Wooten III maintained the show uninterrupted by the pandemic for over two months.

Then, on December 28th, as the quickly-spreading Omicron variant infected several members of the cast and crew, Byrne hosted the first of several “Unchained” versions of the show. A stripped-down format and a skeleton crew saw fans file in for several nights as the Talking Heads co-founder led his Broadway band through modified setlists, including many rare songs that hadn’t been played in years. The “Unchained” format only lasted a couple of weeks and the full cast returned in earnest by mid-January.

Tickets for all shows included in this latest American Utopia extension are on sale now. Head to the official website for a full list of showings and additional information.
