Phish Debuts Rolling Stones Cover In Mexico: Setlist, Recap & Skinny – Night 2

92

Phish’s Riviera Maya 2022 destination event continued Friday night in Mexico and featured the band’s debut cover of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” in the first set. The setlist also saw impressive jamming in both the first and second sets, the latter of which consisted of just four songs.

Friday’s first set started with the Kasvot Växt catalog and “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” The spirited opener was trailed by “Ghost,” prompting an improvisational excursion that saw the four members of the band, guitarist Trey Anastasio, bassist Mike Gordon, keyboardist Page McConnell and drummer Jon Fishman diving into the early-show jam. McConnell began on his Wurlitzer at the atmospheric onset, before moving to piano as the jam increased intensity and tempo as Anastasio asserted himself, firing echoing notes up and down the neck of his guitar. Another powerful effect was employed by Trey as the explosive jam reached a thrilling peak.

The foursome then seamlessly snapped into “Free,” Mike laying down his typically bubbly bassline while Trey showed off more of his cool effects. The band then revved up “Back On The Train” injecting the Farmhouse favorite with a bit of extra emphasis for the typically tame tune.

Trey called up “Halley’s Comet” next and soon he and the others on stage settled into a languid, rhythmic groove, leaving the song’s structure completely while digging deeper into the funk. Page’s synthesizers sent ethereal waves of sound over the audience watching on the beach as the jam steadily progressed, briefly landing back at “Say It To Me S.A.N.T.O.S.” and then segueing into an impromptu (and incomplete) debut cover of The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.”

The unexpected Stones cover was followed by another unbroken transition into “2001.” The space-funk instrumental bled into a fiery “Chalk Dust Torture” that capped the opening set with a high-powered finish.

A cacophony of sound filled the stage before Mike slapped the opening notes of “Down With Disease” to kick start the second set. Trey dropped in “dancing on the sand” and “dancing on the beach” into the song’s opening lyrics. The frequent jam vehicle again delivered a lengthy improvisation, as a bright, vigorous sequence developed with Trey’s guitar and Page’s piano steering the melodic passages over Fish and Mike’s solid and steadying support. The “DWD” jam took a step back into a slower, deliberately paced section that struck somewhere between the realms of alien and angelic.

Another distinct turn occurred as Trey stabilized and energized around a new progression that took the opener beyond the 20-minute mark. A scorching rise in tension followed and propelled to a satisfying resolution. Phish then went “Backwards Down The Number Line” powering through the uplifting Joy track.

The menacing initial riff of “Carini” rang out next as sinister sounds took hold. The dark theme persisted throughout the next few minutes of jamming until Trey introduced a new melody that he cycled through several times, lightening the mood and establishing an inviting groove. Fish kept the dynamics interesting and flowing while Mike supplied melodic playing of his own. While maintaining a patient vibe, the band continuously transitioned from one motif to the next, settling momentarily on one and then moving on to new territory, culminating with the second 20-minute song of the set.

The location-appropriate “A Song I Heard The Ocean Sing” would serve as the final song of the four-song second set. “ASIHTOS” came with a potent shot of psych-rock jamming. A soaring rise to a ripping and climatic conclusion brought the set to an emphatic end.

Prior to the start of the encore, Trey thanked the Moon Palace staff and management for hosting them and pointed out a person’s entertaining lights on their balcony. Trey also acknowledged their “partners and friends,” event promoters CID. Page then led the band through the tender, and also location-appropriate, “Wading In A Velvet Sea.” The evening’s finale was the old-school stalwart “Run Like An Antelope,” once again roaring to its typically rambunctious ending.

Phish: Riviera Maya continues on Saturday with a concert that has a scheduled start time of 7:30 p.m. ET. A livestream is available LivePhish.com with SiriusXM airing the show on Phish Radio.
